Puritan Bennett 980 Ventilator ventilator system helps patients breathe more naturally through innovative breath delivery technology. The Puritan Bennett 980 has an intuitive and highly configurable touchscreen display that gives clinicians the option to see as little or as much information as needed, including five graph and loop layout options. On the digital communication board, the PB 980 offers multiple USB ports for connections to external drives and an HDMI output port to project the touchscreen externally.
The new Puritan Bennett 980 boasts safety features including a “ventilation assurance feature” that will allow for continued operation, as close to the preset settings as feasible, should certain system failures take place. There is an additional screen located on the breath delivery unit that provides a redundant check of ventilator operation, and the ventilator houses up to two batteries without a compressor installed.
Puritan Bennett ventilators also have an expiratory filtration system meant to protect both patients and care staff from cross-contamination.

The Puritan Bennett 980 Ventilator is an acute care ventilator is designed to help patients breathe more naturally, compared to conventional mechanical ventilation, and help clinicians get patients off mechanical ventilation as soon as possible, according to Covidien.
The device is designed for use with neonatal to adult patients.
“We believe mechanical ventilation should be natural enough to enable patients to breathe on their own more quickly,” said James E. Willett, vice president, and general manager, Respiratory Solutions, Covidien. “The Puritan Bennett 980 ventilator provides clinicians with a simple, safe and smart way to care for patients.”
The Puritan Bennett 980 Ventilator is equipped with a range of software capabilities, including Proportional Assist Ventilation Plus (PAV+) and Leak Sync software.
PAV+ has been shown to help reduce asynchrony, according to studies cited by the company. Reducing asynchrony may reduce days on mechanical ventilation, and the PB 980 ventilator features advanced synchrony tools to:
- Assist clinicians setting the ventilator to adapt to their patients’ unique needs;
- Help provide the appropriate level of support throughout the breath.
